LOS ANGELES (TCD) -- A 38-year-old man was recently sentenced to life in prison more than a decade after sexually assaulting and killing two young women whose bodies were dumped near Los Angeles freeways.
One of the victims, 17-year-old Michelle Lozana, disappeared on April 24, 2011. The next day, her remains were found wrapped in plastic bags inside a container that broke open near Interstate 5 in Boyle Heights.
The other victim, Bree’Anna Guzman, 22, disappeared in December 2011. Her partially clothed body was found a month later dumped near the Glendale Freeway. According to KTLA-TV, Guzman was a mother of two girls and was out shopping for cough drops just before the assault and murder.
DNA evidence reportedly linked Geovanni Borjas to both murders, and it was determined that he sexually assaulted the victims as well. He was arrested in 2017, but the trial was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, KTLA reports.
On Oct. 31, Borjas entered a plea of first-degree murder, forcible rape, and kidnapping. He also admitted to special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder during the commission of a rape.
On Monday, Dec. 12, Borjas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to KTLA. Initially, prosecutors were reportedly seeking the death penalty.
