NASHVILLE, Tenn. (TCD) -- SWAT officers shot and killed a 54-year-old man who allegedly held his wife and stepdaughter hostage at gunpoint and threatened to shoot them.
On Thursday, Jan. 5, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released a critical incident briefing regarding the fatal shooting of Mark Capps. According to Don Aaron with Metro Nashville Police, on Thursday at approximately 3 a.m., Capps woke the two women up and brought them into the living room of their Summit Run Place home in Hermitage.
Capps reportedly "refused to allow them to leave" and "pointed his pistol at each of them and told them multiple times that if they attempted to call anyone, he would kill them and any police who showed up at the house."
At one point, Capps reportedly fell asleep, which allowed his wife and stepdaughter to escape with their pets. The two drove to the Hermitage Precinct of the Metro Nashville Police Department and told officers what reportedly occurred.
Police issued warrants for Capps' arrest on two counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault.
SWAT officers were "made aware of the case due to Capps having access to guns and his violent actions overnight," and three members of the team went to his home to arrest him.
Aaron said the SWAT team attempted to make their way to the house without Capps seeing them, but Capps allegedly opened the door with a pistol in his hand.
Video shared by the Metro Nashville Police Department shows a SWAT officer opening fire through the door and kicking his way inside the residence.
Aaron said the officer "deemed Capps' movement posed an immediate, imminent threat, and fired."
Capps reportedly died at the scene.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be conducting an investigation.
Capps won four Grammy awards for sound engineering, and WSMV-TV reports he worked with artists such as Blake Shelton and Alabama.
