DALEVILLE, Ind. (TCD) -- A 28-year-old man was recently found guilty of killing his grandfather during a fight in 2021.
The Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced Friday, Feb. 17, that a jury convicted Trent Kreegar of murder and aggravated battery after a little over five hours of deliberation.
On Sept. 5, 2021, Kreegar reportedly hit his 67-year-old grandfather in the head "with a blunt object multiple times, kicked him in the ribs, and stomped on his head."
The Prosecuting Attorney said Kreegar also threw a steel wheelbarrow on top of his grandfather, causing him to fracture multiple ribs.
Leading up to the attack, the Muncie Star Press reports Kreegar’s grandfather, Robert Earl Huffman Jr., was angry about how much alcohol Kreegar drank, and the two fought outside the victim’s home. Kreegar had reportedly been staying with his grandfather, and Kreegar told the jury he had been drinking vodka for approximately seven hours.
Huffman allegedly found his grandson in a parked car outside his home and pulled him out, and a fight ensued.
Deputy Prosecutor Doug Mawhorr told jurors in his closing remarks that after hitting his grandfather with the wheelbarrow, choking, and kicking him, Kreegar "stomped on his head to finish him off."
Kreegar is reportedly scheduled to be sentenced in March and faces 45 to 65 years for the murder conviction and three to 16 years for the aggravated battery conviction.
According to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the victim would have turned 69 years old on Friday, Feb. 17.
