HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (TCD) -- A 41-year-old man is accused of killing his 36-year-old wife and their unborn child.
In a news release, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office alleged Ernest Weems fatally shot his wife, Tyla Weems, on Pine Lea Drive on the morning of Monday, Feb. 27. She was reportedly four months pregnant at the time of the shooting.
WJTV-TV reports the two were in the middle of an argument when Ernest Weems allegedly opened fire.
Weems was booked into the Hinds County Jail for murder, records show, and the next day, Tuesday, Feb. 28, a judge denied him bond.
Wendy Mahoney, the executive director for the Mississippi Coalition against Domestic Violence, told WAPT, "She was pregnant and carrying a child, so we have two lives that were lost."
The victim reportedly leaves behind two children.
In 2018, Weems was charged with domestic violence simple assault, according to WAPT-TV. Leading up to the alleged 2018 assault, Weems got upset with his wife because she wouldn’t go over divorce papers with him, and he reportedly assaulted her while holding their 2-year-old child.
