ARLINGTON, Texas (TCD) -- A juvenile male was taken into custody Monday morning after he allegedly opened fire outside Lamar High School, killing one student and injuring another.
According to a statement, on March 20 at approximately 6:56 a.m., Arlington Police Department officers responded to a shooting call at the high school and located a male student with an apparent gunshot wound. Police said he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his wounds. A female student was "grazed by the gunfire" and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
An adult reportedly transported her to a nearby hospital.
Arlington Police said school was not in session when the shooting occurred.
Police received descriptions of the suspect from witnesses and located him nearby. The juvenile, whose name was not released, was booked into the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of capital murder. Additional charges are pending. Officers located the weapon they believe was used in the shooting.
NBC DFW reports the suspect is also a student at Lamar High School. The school was put on lockdown for several hours, and it was the first day back for students following their spring break.
Arlington Independent School District Superintendent Marcelo Cavazos said Lamar High School staff members opened the doors to the school, brought students in, and started an "immediate" lockdown. It ended at around 11 a.m.
Cavazos said, "Schools deserve to be a safe place for students to learn and to grow every day. Today, we’re heartbroken."
