OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (TCD) -- A 31-year-old man stands accused of fatally shooting his 40-year-old girlfriend and living with her decomposing body for nearly a week.
According to a news release from the Oklahoma City Police Department, on Saturday, March 25, officers responded to a home on Altadena Avenue to a report of a possible deceased person. There, officers tried to contact Jake Harris, who "refused to come out of the house."
Police said the Oklahoma City Tactical Unit also responded to the scene and "took Harris into custody after several hours."
Inside the home, police found Harris’ girlfriend, Amanda Miller, dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Upon further investigation, police learned she and Harris had argued before the shooting.
Investigators reportedly believe "the shooting took place several days prior."
Miller’s children told KOTV-TV that her body was in a state of decomposition on the garage floor by the time police forced entry into the home.
According to the news source, before Harris was taken into custody, a standoff ensued, and Harris shot at police after hours of negotiation. Harris reportedly surrendered.
Harris was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center for first-degree murder without bond.
Prior to the shooting, Miller’s children told KOTV that their mother had tried to leave Harris in the past.
Miller is reportedly survived by four daughters and 10 grandchildren.
