SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (TCD) -- A 29-year-old was arrested and charged for allegedly "violently slamming" a newborn child into a bassinet while he was in her care at the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office announced Amanda Burke's arrest Wednesday, April 12. District Attorney Raymond Tierney said he charged her with endangering the welfare of a child, which is a misdemeanor.
According to the statement, Burke worked at Good Samaritan Hospital in the NICU. On Feb. 6, she allegedly picked up the 2-day-old while he was laying in the bassinet, "lifted him up, quickly flipped him over, and violently slammed him face down on the bassinet."
The child's father reportedly recorded the entire encounter on his phone through the nursery window. The District Attorney's office said the mother "confronted Burke," then the parents informed nursing staff about the alleged incident. Officials reportedly told Burke to leave, and she was fired "within hours."
NBC New York reports the baby, Nikko, is no longer in the NICU and is at home with his family.
