KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho (TCD) -- A former state police trooper is being charged with murder two years after he called 911 to report his wife fatally shot herself.
According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, on April 21, the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney's Office obtained a warrant to charge Daniel Howard with murder and domestic battery in connection with the death of his wife, Kendy Howard. Daniel Howard reportedly turned himself in to authorities April 21 just before 7 p.m.
The Coeur d'Alene Press reports Daniel Howard called 911 Feb. 2, 2021, and told law enforcement Kendy fatally shot herself. Detectives, however, determined the shot that killed Kendy was not actually self-inflicted.
Daniel Howard reportedly left the Idaho State Police in 2014 following a suspension and charges of grand theft, petit larceny, and possession of an untagged deer in Kootenai County. He also faced other criminal charges in Bonner County.
According to the Spokesman-Review, Kendy Howard had an affair with Daniel's friend, and she told her husband about it in 2013. After learning about the relationship, Daniel Howard poured maple syrup in the man's cars, shot at his house, and send him profane messages.
Howard is being held without bond at the Kootenai County Jail.
