JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (TCD) -- Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested three 18-year-old suspects this week after a 20-year-old woman was killed by a rock thrown at her car.
On the night of April 19, Alexa Bartell was driving near the 10600 block of Indiana Street when suspects threw a large rock at her car, which went through her windshield, hitting and killing her. It was allegedly the actual rock that killed Bartell and not a vehicle crash, NBC News reports.
Bartell was reportedly talking on the phone with a friend moments before her death, and then the phone went silent. The friend was able to track Bartell’s phone on Indiana Street, where she discovered Bartell deceased inside her car, which rolled off the roadway and into a field.
That night, there were reportedly five incidents of large landscaping rocks being thrown at cars. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the three suspects, Joseph Koenig, Nicholas "Mitch" Karol-Chik, and Zachary Kwak, allegedly began throwing the rocks at around 10 p.m. on April 19 near 100th and Simms in Westminster.
The Sheriff’s Office said Bartell’s car was the last one hit during the series of incidents.
The suspects were allegedly driving a black 2016 Chevy Silverado on April 19, but officials could not confirm which person was at the wheel or who specifically threw the rock that reportedly killed Bartell.
The three 18-year-old suspects were arrested and face charges of first-degree murder –– extreme indifference. The Sheriff’s Office said additional charges are possible, and the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office will determine final charges.
According to NBC News, the suspects are all high school seniors at Jefferson County Public Schools.
