HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) -- A 26-year-old woman accused of killing an infant is now facing additional charges for allegedly abusing another baby in her care.
According to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, on April 17, officials received a report of an unresponsive infant who was brought to All Children’s Hospital in Pinellas County with trauma. The infant died on April 21.
Detectives interviewed Haley Barclay, who reportedly confessed to shaking the infant on April 12 and April 13. Prior to the infant’s death, on April 19, Barclay was arrested on charges of child abuse and aggravated child neglect. However, an autopsy report later ruled the child’s death a homicide, and her charges were upgraded to first-degree felony murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse.
The Sheriff’s Office announced April 27 that Barclay allegedly abused a second baby, who was removed from Barclay’s care after sustaining severe upper body trauma.
Barclay now faces an additional charge of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm and remains held in the Falkenburg Road Jail without bond.
Officials did not disclose Barclay’s relationship to the two victims.
In a statement, Sheriff Chad Chronister said, "It is completely sickening to learn this woman, who treated one infant so gruesomely that it resulted in death, was also responsible for the severe physical injuries of another baby."
Chronsiter continued, "I applaud our detectives for continuing this investigation as we seek justice for all victims."
