SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his mother last week.
On April 27, the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office performed a welfare check in the 3100 block of West Aire Drive after callers reported they had not heard from an elderly woman for several days. At the scene, deputies attempted but failed to make contact with anyone in the home.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies "saw a subject down inside the residence and entered," where they found the 64-year-old female deceased. Upon further search of the home, investigators "determined the woman’s death was suspicious," and a homicide investigation was launched.
The victim was identified as Donna Romine, and the Sangamon County Coroner said she died from a single gunshot wound.
The victim’s son, Richard Romine, became a person of interest in her death, the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office said. He was located and transported to St. John’s Hospital "due to a medical event," which officials did not specify.
He was later booked into the Sangamon County Jail on May 2 and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of concealment of a homicidal death, one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding. Romine remains held on $2 million bond.
