MARTHA’S VINEYARD, Mass. (TCD) -- Massachusetts State Police investigators are searching for answers after employees at a recycling facility discovered a newborn girl’s remains amid the trash.
According to Massachusetts State Police, on Thursday, April 27, employees at Zero Waste Solution recycling facility in Rochester discovered the child "within a trash collection that appears to have originated from Martha’s Vineyard." State police believe that trash collection was shipped to the recycling facility "for disposal."
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted a postmortem on the newborn, but the results were not immediately released.
On Monday, May 1, Massachusetts State Police announced they are working with the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office to identify the child and her mother. District Attorney Robert Galibois said the "health and welfare of the mother may be at risk," adding it was "of paramount importance and urgency" to identify her as soon as possible.
The statement said the child’s mother or father "may live on, have ties to, or recently have traveled to Martha’s Vineyard."
The discovery comes about three weeks after another newborn child’s remains were found outside an apartment in Revere, Massachusetts.
