DETROIT (TCD) -- Police located and arrested a 27-year-old man accused of opening fire inside a gas station convenience store and shooting three people, one fatally.
On Saturday, May 6, a man fired shots inside the Mobil Gas Station located at 12800 W. McNichols and then fled the scene in a white Ford Expedition. Detroit Police offered a $1,000 reward for the man’s apprehension. Two days later, Detroit Police announced they arrested the suspect, who the Detroit Free Press identified as Samuel McCray.
Wayne County court records show McCray is being charged with first-degree premeditated murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearm, and one count of possessing a firearm as a felon. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to WDIV-TV, McCray allegedly walked into the convenience store at approximately 3 a.m. and tried to buy something that was $3. The transaction was reportedly declined, and McCray allegedly attempted to leave the store with the item. The clerk reportedly locked the doors.
The Detroit Free Press reports McCray threatened the other customers inside the store and said he would shoot everyone. One of the victims, David Langston, reportedly told McCray, "Don’t shoot."
Langston and his best friend, Gregory Karlos Samuel Fortner-Kelly, asked the clerk to open the doors, but McCray allegedly fired at the two friends and another victim anyway. Thirty-seven-year-old Fortner-Kelly was killed in the shooting.
The clerk reportedly opened the door after the shooting, and McCray fled the scene.
Fortner-Kelly leaves behind three children.
