VALE, N.C. (TCD) -- Officials arrested and charged a married couple for allegedly beating a 6-year-old child with a wooden paddle.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, on May 12, detectives received a report of possible child abuse after a Cleveland County speech therapist noticed bruising on a patient’s bottom. A Cleveland County social worker then reportedly met with the child’s parents. While speaking with Jonathan and Silvia Orren, the social worker reportedly took photos of a wooden paddle with holes drilled in it.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the social worker also viewed surveillance footage from inside the home that allegedly showed Jonathan and Silvia Orren spanking the child with the paddle. Investigators believe the child "had been abused on a number of different occasions."
On May 17, the couple was arrested and charged with one felony count each of child abuse involving any serious injury. The Sheriff’s Office said the couple was released on bond.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim and her 5-year-old brother are now in the custody of family members out of state.
