LAFAYETTE, Ind. (TCD) -- A 23-year-old man wanted in the Chicago area for murder was arrested outside Indianapolis late last week after a 3-year-old child shot two people, including the murder suspect.
According to USA Today, on the evening of Thursday, May 18, Lafayette Police went to the Franciscan Health Lafayette East hospital regarding two victims suffering from gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening. Lafayette Police Lt. Justin Hartman told USA Today a 3-year-old child at the home "accessed a gun and fired one round, striking two people."
While investigating the shooting, police learned one of the victims, Trayshawn Smith, was wanted out of Cook County, Illinois. CNN reports the second victim was the child’s mother. It was not known how he obtained the weapon. Smith was reportedly visiting the mother at her apartment where the shooting took place.
According to WLFI-TV, the child’s mother was released from the hospital after being treated for her injuries.
Tippecanoe County Jail records show Smith is being held without bond.
