MIDDLESEX COUNTY, N.J. (TCD) -- A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder several months after a newly elected city councilwoman was fatally shot in her car in front of her home.
On Tuesday, May 30, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced in a news conference that detectives from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes division and several other law enforcement agencies arrested Rashid Ali Bynum outside a home in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was taken into custody on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose in connection with the death of 30-year-old Eunice Dwumfour.
Bynum is in custody in Virginia and will be extradited to New Jersey.
Dwumfour was found dead in her car Feb. 1 from multiple gunshot wounds. Ciccone said several witnesses noticed a "suspicious" vehicle in the area.
Bynum’s phone reportedly showed he traveled from Virginia to New Jersey and back to Virginia on the day of the shooting.
According to Ciccone, Bynum’s number was saved in Dwumfour’s phone with the acronym FCF, which she said is believed to reference the Fire Congress Fellowship, a church. Around the time of the shooting, Bynum allegedly searched the internet for information about Dwumfour’s church and the area around Sayreville where she lived.
Chesapeake Jail records show Bynum is being held without bond as he awaits extradition.
