LANDOVER, Md. (TCD) -- A 44-year-old woman stands accused of killing her 71-year-old mother and disposing of her remains with the help of her 19-year-old daughter.
According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, on Friday, June 2, shortly after 1:30 p.m., officers performed a welfare check on the 200 block of Hill Road after a worried individual reported that they had not spoken with Margaret Craig for several days. At the scene, officers made contact with Margaret’s daughter, Candace Craig, who opened the door and allowed them to search the home.
Authorities reportedly entered the basement and "immediately smelled the odor of decomposition." Prince George’s County Police contacted the Homicide and Evidence Units, who took over the investigation.
After gathering additional evidence and conducting interviews, police said they believe Candace Craig killed her mother May 23 and enlisted her daughter, Salia Hardy, to help get rid of the remains.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to confirm the victim’s identity and cause of death. Officials are investigating a possible motive.
Police arrested Craig on charges of first- and second-degree murder, while Hardy faces a charge of accessory after the fact. They remain held in the Department of Corrections.
