DETROIT (TCD) -- A 40-year-old man allegedly fatally shot a 25-year-old customer during a dispute about beef jerky this week.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Thursday, June 8, that her office is charging Moad Mohamed Al-Gaham with first-degree murder and felony firearm.
On Monday, June 5, at around 3:14 a.m., Detroit Police officers responded to a gas station in the 4410 block of Vernor Highway to a report of a shooting, Worthy said. At the scene, officers found Anthony McNary "lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the forehead."
McNary was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, investigators allege McNary and Al-Gaham, the gas station’s clerk, had a "heated exchange of words" when "McNary took a beef jerky product and placed it in his pocket."
Al-Gaham allegedly reached into McNary’s pocket, grabbed the beef jerky, and put it back on the shelf. McNary then reportedly tried to pay for the beef jerky, but Al-Gaham "refused to accept the money and made Mr. McNary leave the store."
Worthy said Al-Gaham locked the gas station doors to prevent McNary from coming back inside. Al-Gaham then allegedly grabbed a handgun, "held it in the line of the victim’s forehead," and fatally shot McNary. Worthy noted that McNary was unarmed at the time.
Al-Gaham was arraigned June 8 and is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on June 22.
The shooting comes nearly a month after Worthy announced charges against another Detroit-area gas station clerk who allegedly fatally shot a victim.
In a statement, Worthy said, "Here we are less than one month after the locked door incident at a Detroit gas station on West McNichols. This simply cannot continue to happen."
