LAKE BARRINGTON, Ill. (TCD) -- A 62-year-old man who reportedly accidentally shot himself in his sleep while dreaming about a burglary attempt has been charged with illegally owning a firearm.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, on April 10 at 9:50 p.m., deputies went to a home on the 100 block of Shoreline Road in Lake Barrington after receiving a call about a person shot and found Mark Dicara suffering a gunshot wound to his leg. Deputies quickly applied a tourniquet to his leg because he was "losing a significant amount of blood."
Investigators learned Dicara reportedly "had a dream that someone was breaking into his home," so he picked up his .357 Magnum revolver and fired at the suspected burglar. However, Dicara "shot himself and apparently woke up from the dream."
Medics transported him to a local hospital for treatment of his wound.
The statement says the bullet "lodged itself into Dicara’s bedding" after exiting through his leg. The round reportedly did not hit a wall he shares with his neighbors.
Lake County investigators learned that Dicara’s Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) had been revoked, but he still owned a gun. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dicara June 12 after the State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of possession of a firearm without a valid FOID Card and reckless discharge of a firearm.
He was booked into the Lake County Jail and was later released after posting bond.
