STATESVILLE, N.C. (TCD) -- Deputies have arrested a 61-year-old senior living facility resident who allegedly beat his 69-year-old roommate to death with a blunt object.
On the evening of Friday, June 2, at around 8:45 p.m., the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to Heritage Place Adult Living Center on Eufola Road after facility employees called 911 to report one of their residents, Greggory Warner, assaulted his roommate, Mark Leggette.
Upon their arrival, deputies found Leggette conscious, but he had been "beaten repeatedly in the head with a blunt object." Iredell County Emergency Medical Service rushed the victim to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for emergency medical care, where he died nearly a week later, on Friday, June 9.
On Monday, June 12, the Medical Examiner determined Leggette’s death was "caused by injuries received during the assault."
The Sheriff’s Office identified Warner as the primary suspect and took him into custody. Warner was initially booked into the Iredell County Detention Center on a charge of felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury. However, following the victim’s death, officials charged Warner with first-degree murder on June 12. He remains held without bond.
