ROSEVILLE, Calif. (TCD) -- A judge sentenced a 32-year-old man last week to 26 years to life for stabbing his father to death in 2021 because he was angry about his childhood.
According to the Placer County District Attorney's Office, the Honorable Judge Jeffrey Penney handed down the sentence against James Shade on Friday, June 16, after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon last month.
On Sunday, March 14, 2021, the Roseville Police Department responded to a home in the 600 block of Hanisch Drive, where they found the victim, 62-year-old Larry Shade, deceased. Shade, who had been stabbed over 20 times, reportedly "walked to his neighbor's house and cried for help before passing away on their front porch as they tried to summon aid."
Police identified the victim's son, James Shade, as the suspect and took him into custody.
Shade was reportedly "angry and resentful" toward his father for a "tumultuous childhood." However, during the trial, it was revealed that the victim tried to help his son and "have a relationship with him" as an adult, the District Attorney's Office said. Shade reportedly lived on his father's property in Paradise, California, but the victim was planning to move back, which "created additional conflict between the victim and defendant."
Prior to the victim's death, Shade reportedly threatened his father for years.
According to the District Attorney's Office, Shade told jurors he drove to his father's home in Roseville to serve him with a restraining order "while armed with a knife," and he "acted in self-defense when he stabbed his father." Shade's father reportedly gave him the knife weeks before his stabbing death.
Deputy District Attorney Anna Duffy noted that Shade's "lack of remorse has been particularly disturbing."
Duffy added, "His anger toward his father did not in any way justify his decision to brutally end another human’s life. He made the choice to extinguish the life of a father, brother, son, uncle and friend to avenge his own anger, without regard to the suffering he caused to the victim or those who cared about the victim."
