PLAIN CITY, Ohio (TCD) -- Police are investigating how and why a newborn with her umbilical cord still attached was found deceased inside a garbage truck last week.
According to a statement, on Thursday, June 15, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a waste management company contacted Plain City Police to report someone discovered a human body in the truck during their work shift. Police went to the 100 block of Bluestem Lane and found the newborn in the rear of the garbage truck.
Police said the child "appeared to be a full-term newborn from zero to one month of age."
Medics from Pleasant Valley Joint Fire District responded to the scene and pronounced the child dead at 2:33 p.m.
Police said the Montgomery County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy, but there was no immediate known cause of death. The medical examiner identified the child as a female.
Investigators submitted DNA to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Laboratory and are "focused on identifying the infant and determining what led to the infant's death." Police also said they are "concerned about the health of the mother due to the strong potential that the baby was born without professional healthcare assistance."
In an update July 20, Plain City Police said they named the girl "Madison Baby Doe" and are holding a funeral for her Saturday, June 24, because she "deserved far more than what she received."
