ALBION, Mich. (TCD) -- Police saved a 2-year-old girl’s life last weekend after her mother allegedly tried to drown her in the bathtub and injure her other children.
According to a news release, on Saturday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m., Albion Police Department officers and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call "with children screaming and asking for help" on Bluestem Court. Albion Police arrived and heard a "commotion from behind a locked door in the residence," so they knocked it down to gain entry inside.
Officers reportedly found a 35-year-old woman holding her 2-year-old daughter under the water in the bathtub, but they saved the toddler and took her to the living room to perform CPR.
Albion Police said, "After giving a few quick breaths, the child coughed up water and began breathing on her own."
Body camera footage shows the officers making their way inside, rescuing the girl, and compressing her chest to get her to breathe again.
The woman is the mother of three other children in the home. The statement said the 2-year-old suffered stab wounds to her chest and throat, while a 4-year-old boy had cuts on his body. Police suspect they might have ingested a cleaning fluid. Two other children, an 8-year-old and 15-year-old, did not appear injured. The 15-year-old was the one who contacted police.
Albion Police took the mother into custody and then transported her to the hospital because she also likely ingested cleaning liquids.
The two injured children are reportedly in stable condition.
WZZM-TV reports the mother, who was identified as Jessica Edward-Ricks, is being charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, and two counts of second-degree child abuse. She reportedly pleaded not guilty.
