2 killed, 28 injured during shooting at Baltimore block party

BALTIMORE (TCD) -- Two people were killed and more than two dozen others were injured in a mass shooting at a block party over the weekend in South Baltimore.
According to a news release, on Sunday, July 2, at 12:35 a.m., Baltimore Police Department officers were called to the 800 block of Gretna Court for a report of a shooting and found "multiple shooting victims" at the scene. Baltimore Police said there were 30 victims in total.
An 18-year-old woman, later identified as Aaliyah Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 20-year-old male, Kylis Fagbemi, died at a hospital soon after he arrived. Three people are in critical condition and 20 others transported themselves to hospitals around the area.
The victims range in age from 13 to 32 years old, with 17 females and 11 males injured. The female victims include one 13-year-old, one 14-year-old, two 15-year-olds, three 16-year-olds, two 17-year-olds, two 18-year-olds, three 19-year-olds, one 20-year-old, one 23-year-old, and one 32-year-old.
Male victims include one 13-year-old, one 15-year-old, two 16-year-old, two 17-year-olds, three 18-year-olds, one 22-year-old and one 31-year-old.
WJZ-TV reports the shooting occurred at an annual event called Brooklyn Day, which is held at the Brooklyn Homes and has been taking place for the last 27 years. Though police usually have a presence at the block party, acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the department did not learn about this year’s Brooklyn Day until the day of.
Worley said at a press conference Monday, July 3, that Brooklyn Day was not a permitted event, and due to hearing about it so late, there was not a "robust deployment" or plan like last year.
Police are still searching for the suspect or suspects and no arrests have been made yet.
