SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) -- Two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old were arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot and killed when they went to egg his house as part of an “ongoing lovers' quarrel.”
According to the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, on July 3, deputies were called to the 100 block of Dobbins Mill Road, where they found a male deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim did not have identification on him, but fingerprint analysis later identified him as Johnathan Gilbert. He also reportedly went by the name Tyler Lane.
Investigators found a witness, who shared information with deputies that "provided them with information related to the shooting, and through that they created a direct link between the victim and the suspects." Investigators obtained one of the suspect’s phone numbers and tracked them to a home in Henry County.
Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix said Henry County Police officers went to the home and executed search warrants on the residence and the suspect’s car. Investigators reportedly found a gun believed to be used in the fatal shooting.
Deputies arrested Sydney Maughon and Jeremy Munson, both 18, on charges of murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and criminal trespass. Maughon is also charged with battery — family violence. A third suspect, 19-year-old McKenzie Davenport, was taken into custody for malice murder, battery, and criminal trespass.
Dix said in the statement the suspects went to Gilbert’s home with the intention of egging it due to an "ongoing lovers' quarrel."
It was not clear which of the suspects was involved in the suspected "lovers' quarrel."
Gilbert reportedly caught the suspects egging his house and he walked outside to confront them. He was reportedly unarmed. Maughon, Munson, and Davenport reportedly ran back to the car as Gilbert moved toward them. Maughon, who was in the back seat of the car, "produced a firearm and shot him multiple times."
Then, they reportedly "drove away leaving Gilbert dead in the middle of Dobbins Mill Road."
Dix said the three "all plotted and planned together," which leaves them "all culpable."
He added, "They went to egg a house, the victim confronted them while they were doing it, he lost his life, and they drove off and left his body in the middle of the road. Together they bought that ticket; now together they can ride that ride."
