Utah man sentenced to 100 years in prison for killing his mom, 3 siblings when he was 16

TOOELE, Utah (TCD) -- A judge sentenced a 20-year-old man to at least 100 years in prison for fatally shooting his mother and three siblings at their home in 2020 when he was 16 years old.

KSL.com reports a Tooele County judge handed Colin Jeffrey "CJ" Haynie four consecutive sentences of 25 years to life in prison after he pleaded guilty in July 2022 to aggravated murder for the deaths of his mother, 52-year-old Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 15-year-old sister Alexis Haynie, 12-year-old sister Milan Haynie, and 14-year-old brother Matthew Haynie.

The Tooele County Attorney’s Office said when Haynie pleaded guilty that the 25 years to life sentence was the maximum because he was still a juvenile when the crime occurred.

CJ Haynie also pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder for trying to kill his father, Colin. That sentence of 25 years to life will be served concurrently.

He was sentenced July 12, though it was initially scheduled for December 2022.

According to the Tooele County Attorney’s Office, on Jan. 17, 2020, a woman called 911 to report CJ and Colin Haynie were in her car and they were driving to the hospital. CJ told her moments before the call that he killed his family.

The dispatcher reportedly spoke with CJ, who said he shot his mother at approximately 1 p.m., then "killed the others as they returned home."

They all suffered gunshot wounds to the head or upper body.

CJ reportedly shot Colin in the leg when he got home, and the two got into an altercation. CJ hit him in the head with an object, which caused a laceration, but Colin ultimately got the gun out of CJ’s hands. CJ reportedly told his father that his intention "was to kill everyone in the house except himself."

According to KSL.com, CJ said in a pre-sentencing report, "I thought if I killed my dad, everyone would turn against me, so I made a selfish decision to kill them all."

Prosecutors argued CJ massacred his family because he wanted a "clean slate" and "new opportunity in life."

Court documents cited by KSL.com say Haynie suffered from "severe anxiety." He also reportedly told a therapist about his "increasing social isolation in the months before January 2020, along with increasing arguments and unfulfilled expectations with his father, which led to further isolation."
