First grade teacher allegedly sexually assaulted 6 students during recess

LOS ANGELES (TCD) -- A 29-year-old first grade schoolteacher faces charges after allegedly sexually assaulting six female students.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Wednesday, July 12, that Martin Reyes Jr., a teacher at Sunrise Elementary School in East Los Angeles, has been charged with 10 counts of lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, on May 22, a student reported that Reyes had sexually abused her. Investigators allege Reyes sexually abused at least six female students during recess inside a classroom. The victims were all reportedly enrolled in his class.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officials arrested Reyes, and his bond was set at $1 million. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 27.
Police announced they are seeking additional victims.
Gascón said in a statement, "Our educators are entrusted with creating a safe and nurturing environment where students can learn and grow without the fear of abuse or exploitation. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that schools are places where all students can thrive, free from the threat of sexual violence."
