3 people, including suspect, dead after ex-employee opens fire at La. shipyard

HARVEY, La. (TCD) -- Deputies have fatally shot a man who allegedly killed two people at a shipyard where he used to work.
According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, July 17, at approximately 1 p.m., deputies responded to a shipyard on the 3600 block of Peters Road after receiving a call about a shooting. When they arrived, they found two unresponsive males outside the yard on the ground suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office said the suspect targeted the two men, who worked at the shipyard. The suspect also reportedly was previously employed at the location. Witnesses at the scene identified the shooter and detectives began searching for him.
Within hours, uniformed and plainclothes deputies located the suspect at an apartment complex on the 2100 block of Manhattan Boulevard and noticed him walking toward a dumpster. The suspect reportedly ran from deputies as they approached him. The man allegedly "fired several shots at the deputies," who shot at him multiple times.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
WGNO-TV reports the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 48-year-old Nakie James Brown and 20-year-old Dustin Parrie Jr., and the suspect as 31-year-old Willis Thomas Jr. Thomas Jr. was reportedly fired last week.
The shooting occurred at FMT Shipyard, which stands for Florida Marine Transportation.
