MARION, N.C. (TCD) -- Police are searching for a 34-year-old female suspect after her disabled sister was found dead during a welfare check this week.
According to a news release from the Marion Police Department, on Tuesday, July 25, officers responded to a home on East Court Street and attempted to make contact with anyone inside the residence but failed to do so. Police met with family members at the scene who didn’t have access to enter the home, and they explained there was a disabled person inside who requires "around-the-clock care."
Police located an unlocked window and used flashlights to find an immobile person inside a bedroom. Officers then went through the front door to render aide to the person, but once they were inside, police discovered that the victim, 27-year-old Kristin Rutherford, was deceased.
Investigators reportedly responded to the home shortly after and executed a search warrant.
Officials conducted interviews with family members and witnesses and learned Rutherford "needed extensive in-home care to ensure her well-being and safety."
Police said the victim’s sister, Casie McCartha, who also lives in the home, was Rutherford’s designated caretaker. However, she was reportedly not home, and Rutherford was alone at the time of the discovery.
The Marion Police Department secured a felony warrant for McCartha on a charge of concealing the death of a person and have asked the public’s help in locating her.
Police said she was last known to be driving a 2016 silver Ford Fusion.
