RENSSELAER, N.Y. (TCD) -- A grand jury indicted a 33-year-old man after a 3-year-old girl died last month and likely suffered sexual abuse.
On July 7 at approximately 7:20 a.m., the Rensselaer City Police and Fire Departments and ambulance service responded to 1552 Broadway after receiving a call about an unresponsive young female. EMS performed lifesaving measures on the girl when they arrived and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced deceased following additional medical attention.
The suspect, Robert Fisher II, reportedly attempted to get into the scene at the home and "obstruct police operations." He was arrested on charges of obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief. Following questioning by the New York State Police Major Crimes Unit investigators, he was later charged with first-degree aggravated sexual abuse, third-degree assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was booked into the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility and is being held without bail.
Fisher's relationship to the child was not immediately clear, but police said her parents are "cooperating with the investigation."
In an updated news release, the Rensselaer City Police Department announced a grand jury indicted Fisher on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree rape. His arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 2.
