GAINESVILLE, Ga. (TCD) -- Police arrested a 23-year-old babysitter this week accused of assaulting a 1-year-old child this past winter.
The Gainesville Police Department announced Aug. 1 that Abby Chosewood "nearly killed" the victim after she allegedly "suffocated and/or strangled a 1-year-old child causing bodily harm" in February.
According to WSB-TV, surveillance cameras did not capture the alleged assault, so Chosewood became a suspect after months of investigation.
Officers arrested Chosewood and booked her into the Hall County Jail on charges of felony cruelty to children and felony aggravated assault.
Lt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department reportedly said, "It is unthinkable, and there is nothing for us to go on exactly why this did happen."
Holbrook continued, "This is something that we may never know — as when the child obviously is too young to tell us the truth. But obviously, Chosewood knows exactly what happened and hopefully, it’ll come out in court."
Prior to the incident, WSB reports that Chosewood pleaded guilty to identity and financial transaction fraud in 2021 and received two years of probation.
