SUN VALLEY, Nev. (TCD) -- A 21-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of fatally shooting the 20-year-old mother of his child over the weekend.
According to a news release from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, on Saturday, Aug. 5, shortly before 9:30 a.m., deputies responded to the 5300 block of Woods Drive and found Jennifer Beltran-Galassi inside a car with a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical personnel transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The Sheriff's Office identified Esteban Garcia as the primary suspect and found him at a nearby home. Detectives arrested him Aug. 6 and booked him into the Washoe County Detention Facility on charges of open murder and owning/possessing a firearm by a prohibited person.
Prior to Beltran-Galassi's fatal shooting, the Sheriff's Office said Garcia was convicted of domestic battery and abuse, neglect, or endangerment of a child on July 27. A Sparks Justice Court judge issued a no-contact order with Beltran-Galassi and sentenced Garcia to probation.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the victim and suspect were involved in a domestic relationship and shared a minor child.
Garcia remains held on $1 million bail.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said in a statement, "On behalf of the members of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, we express our deepest condolences and wish Jennifer’s loved ones peace and courage while they endure this unimaginable loss."
Sheriff Balaam continued, "A person should never fear for their physical safety at the hands of their partner."
