Wanted man captured in Mexico after 32 years on the run

NEW ORLEANS (TCD) -- FBI agents have captured a man who had been wanted for over 30 years after he fled from a courthouse before a jury convicted him of attempted murder.
The FBI’s New Orleans Bureau announced last week that Greg Lawson was located and apprehended in Huatulco, Mexico, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, after a 32-year manhunt. Agents found him after receiving a tip, though they suspected since the start that he was likely south of the border "based on various tips and alleged sightings."
The FBI shared a video Sept. 21 of Lawson getting escorted into a building and being handcuffed.
KTBS-TV reports Lawson shot Seth Garlington and he survived, but it left him seriously injured. The two reportedly got into an argument and Lawson made Garlington drive off the road. Lawson then shot him.
Lawson went to trial in 1991, but he didn’t show up to court the day of the verdict. Officials reportedly located his car a few blocks away, but Lawson was nowhere to be seen.
Douglas A. Williams Jr., special agent in charge of FBI New Orleans, said in the statement, "We want to thank our partners and the public in this case, who never gave up hope that justice could be served for Mr. Lawson’s victim. There is no doubt that Mr. Lawson might still be in the wind if our partners in Mexico had not been willing to deal with this so swiftly."
