Florida man accused of killing 81-year-old security guard outside retirement community

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) -- A 23-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of killing an 81-year-old gate guard last week outside a community for residents 55 years and older.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, Sept. 28, at approximately 10:15 p.m., someone called 911 to report a medical emergency near the entrance of High Point 55+ Golf Community. Officials responded to the scene and quickly determined the person had been the victim of a crime.
Fire Rescue transported the victim, later identified by WFLA-TV as Ed Mead, to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives conducted witness interviews, obtained video surveillance, and identified the suspect as Jeremy Patterson.
The Sheriff’s Office asked for the public’s help in finding the suspect, and on Sept. 29, deputies located and apprehended Patterson in a wooded area near the gated community.
The Sheriff’s Office booked Patterson into the Hernando County Jail on a charge of murder, where he remains held without bond.
