DETROIT (TCD) -- A 24-year-old man stands accused of severely assaulting his infant daughter, causing her death last year.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, on June 26, 2023, shortly after 11 a.m., Charles Evans allegedly fatally assaulted his 9-month-old daughter, Kinsley Evans, at a home in the 12200 block of Schaefer Highway. Medics arrived and transported the infant to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The child's grandmother told WXYZ-TV that on that day, the victim was under the care of her father, and when she tried to pick up the baby, the defendant allegedly refused to return her.
The victim's grandmother also told WXYZ that Charles Evans had allegedly been physically abusive toward his infant daughter in the past and was not allowed to see her.
Detroit Police arrested Charles Evans on March 16. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged the defendant with felony murder and first-degree child abuse.
Worthy said the baby "lived a very short life of pain," adding, "The alleged facts are unbelievably tragic in this case. The injuries inflicted on this 9-month-old baby are too numerous to fathom."
Charles Evans appeared in court for his arraignment on March 17 and was remanded to jail.
