CASTROVILLE, Calif. (TCD) -- A 38-year-old man will spend five years in state prison for sex trafficking his underage family member for thousands of dollars.
Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni announced that on March 20, a judge handed down the sentence against Obdulio Aparicio after he was convicted of one count of human trafficking of a minor for commercial sex purposes, one count of child abuse, and one count of misdemeanor domestic violence. Aparicio will also have to register as a sexual offender for life.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, on April 28, 2023, deputies responded to a report of possible child abuse from North Monterey County School District officials in the 11000 block of Merritt Street. Investigators learned Aparicio had sold one of his relatives, 14-year-old Jane Doe, to Javier Saavedra for $12,000.
Jane Doe was reportedly living with 20-year-old Saavedra in the 300 block of Iris Drive in Salinas, California, when deputies received the report. As officials began investigating, they also learned Aparicio previously pushed his wife down, causing a bruise and cut.
Police initially arrested Saavedra on charges of contact minor for sexual offense, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor three years younger, sodomy with person under 18 years, and oral copulation with minor.
According to the district attorney's office, in October 2023, Saavedra was convicted of committing statutory rape against Jane Doe and oral copulation of a person under 18 years of age. Saavedra was sentenced to 270 days in jail, three years of felony probation, and was ordered to attend a sex offender treatment program.
