LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP, Ill. (TCD) -- A 70-year-old man faces charges after allegedly shooting and severely injuring his neighbor this week in what investigators believe was a racially motivated attack.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, May 7, at around 5:37 p.m., deputies responded to a location near 114th Place and Rickerman Road in reference to shots fired. Witnesses said John Shadbar allegedly shot his 45-year-old neighbor, and he was seen on his property with a rifle. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place.
Deputies arrived and secured the scene before attempting lifesaving measures on the victim, who was identified by WFLD-TV as Melissa Robertson. Robertson reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the chest that "exited her back," as well as one to her hand.
Robertson was transported to a hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. The sheriff’s office said she is recovering, and her aunt told WFLD that as of Wednesday, May 8, she is in critical but stable condition.
According to deputies, after shooting his neighbor, Shadbar allegedly went into his home and barricaded himself. A crisis negotiator spoke with Shadbar via phone, and Shadbar allegedly "made several incriminating statements." The negotiator eventually convinced Shadbar to surrender peacefully, and deputies apprehended him without incident.
Shadbar faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
Investigators obtained surveillance footage from the area. According to the sheriff’s office, further charges are likely, as "this incident appears to be racially motivated."
Family and friends told WFLD that Shadbar previously made statements about Robertson looking after two African American boys.
Shadbar remains held in the Will County Adult Detention Facility without bond.
