ROYAL OAK, Mich. (TCD) -- Police arrested a 34-year-old man over the weekend after he allegedly attempted to break into the home of a former co-worker and love interest with "concerning items."
According to a news release from the Royal Oak Police Department, on Saturday, June 1, at around 1:20 a.m., a woman called 911 after she awoke to a man trying to enter through her side door. The suspect, later identified as Levi Smith, attempted to walk away when the victim activated the panic alarm, but two officers stopped him.
Police said Smith was wearing latex gloves and carrying a backpack with "concerning items," including a loaded gun, large knife, handcuffs, rope, masks, a hammer, duct tape, and more latex gloves.
Smith and the victim are reportedly former co-workers, and he "had exhibited a romantic interest in her in the past and targeted her in this incident."
Smith faces one count of attempted first-degree home invasion and one count of felony firearm. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for the attempted home invasion charge and up to two years for felony firearm. Smith appeared in court for his arraignment on June 4, and his bond was set at $25,000.
In a statement, Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore said, "The quick thinking of the victim to contact police once she realized this dangerous situation was unfolding prevented a much worse outcome."
