LOUISVILLE, Ky. (TCN) -- A 22-year-old woman was taken into custody after police reportedly discovered a newborn child’s decomposing body in a plastic bag.
According to WDRB-TV, on Saturday, July 6, Louisville Metro Police Department officers were called to the 700 block of Zorn Avenue after receiving information about a newborn that "was placed in a bag and hidden in a closet." When they arrived at the apartment, they reportedly discovered the bag, which had "possible blood and flies on it."
WAVE-TV reports officers spoke with Daira Mejia-Aguilar, who said she put the child’s body in the trunk of her car but put the bag back in her closet. The next day, police returned and located the baby in her vehicle. WDRB reports the baby was wrapped in a blanket and was "in the early stages of decomposition."
Mejia-Aguilar said she gave birth sometime around July 2, according to WLKY-TV. The child was reportedly full-term, and investigators are working to determine whether the infant was stillborn or died after birth.
Mejia-Aguilar was booked into the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections on a charge of abuse of a corpse. WAVE reports she pleaded not guilty and was placed on house arrest.
