SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (TCN) -- A 41-year-old man accused of decapitating his parents is in stable condition after a deputy struck him in an officer-involved shooting this week.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, on the morning of July 9, deputies responded to a domestic assault call on Alipaz Street. At the scene, authorities observed what they called a "horrific scene" with the "decapitated and mutilated" remains of 79-year-old Antoinette Gerdvil and her husband, 77-year-old Ronald Gerdvil. The sheriff’s department also found the couple’s dog decapitated.
Sheriff’s dispatch alerted deputies about a bloody male, later identified as the victims’ son and suspect, 41-year-old Joseph Gerdvil, who was seen chasing a maintenance working in the area. He reportedly stole the worker’s golf cart and fled.
Deputies located Gerdvil near a bike trail, and an officer-involved shooting ensued. According to the sheriff’s department, Gerdvil was struck multiple times. Officials rendered aid to the suspect, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Public Information Officer Matt Parrish said Gerdvil is listed in critical but stable condition.
Upon his release, Gerdvil will be booked into the Orange County Jail on two counts of homicide. Further charges and enhancements are likely.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the deputy-involved shooting per protocol, and officials will release footage from the incident.
