MARION, Ohio (TCN) -- A 36-year-old man will spend at least five decades in prison for kidnapping, raping, and torturing a woman last year.
Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan announced July 11 that Shane Hooper received a sentence of 50 to 55 1/2 years after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of strangulation. Grogan said Hooper's crimes "shocked the community."
Between May 2023 and June 2023, Hooper reportedly detained the female victim at her own home. Prosecutors said Hooper physically abused her over the course of several days, causing broken bones, open wounds, and multiple fractured ribs.
According to Grogan, "Hooper escalated his control over the victim by nailing doors and windows shut to prevent her escape." He reportedly tortured the victim using a baseball bat and a metal chain.
Hooper also "subjected the victim to intense psychological terror" and threatened to kill the victim and her family.
Hooper eventually moved the victim to another location on Silver Street. According to the prosecutor's office, individuals noticed the woman's distress and alerted law enforcement.
In a statement at Hooper's sentencing, Grogan said, "Shane Hooper created a torture chamber and trapped this woman in it. Now he’ll be trapped in prison for at least the next 50 years."
