REED CITY, Mich. (TCN) -- A 31-year-old woman is being charged with murder after she allegedly got drunk while babysitting her girlfriend’s 4-month-old child and severely injuring her, leading to the baby’s death.
According to MLive.com, on Saturday, July 21, at 2 a.m., Reed City Police Department officers responded to an apartment on West Franklin Avenue regarding an unresponsive infant.
WXMI-TV reports the child’s mother, Amber McCall, came home from work and could not get in contact with the suspect, Savannah Miller, nor could she get into her own apartment. McCall and a co-worker looked through a window and saw Miller asleep, so they yelled for her to wake up and let them in. Court documents cited by WXMI say McCall and her co-worker "walked into the room and observed the baby in a Pack ‘n Play. The baby was laying on her back, face up, on the top of a blanket. The baby had bruises all over her body."
The victim, who was identified as Renzi McCall, had a "very severe injury to her right eye, orbital, and bruises to her stomach, and bruises to her hip."
They called paramedics, who transported Renzi McCall to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where she was placed on life support. WZZM-TV reports Renzi McCall underwent brain surgery for swelling.
Reed City Police began an investigation and arrested Miller on a charge of child abuse.
According to WZZM, Renzi McCall continued to have seizures and brain swelling after the surgery. She was taken off life support on Wednesday, July 25.
WXMI reports Miller ordered 10 mini Fireball whiskey shooters on Door Dash while she was babysitting even though she had recently stopped drinking. A detective reportedly testified in court this week that Miller "is of average height and weight, but she admits that her tolerance is really low to alcohol because she hasn’t drank in four months."
Miller allegedly claimed Renzi McCall sustained her injuries when she fell off her bed and a kitchen counter. Miller said she was leaving the kitchen holding the little girl and hit her head on a "sharp edge."
Miller described the evening babysitting as "blurry."
After Renzi McCall was taken off life support, Miller’s charges were upgraded to first-degree child abuse, second-degree child abuse, felony murder, and second-degree murder.
Miller’s sister told WZZM Miller abused her and her own kids.
The sister said, "She’s narcissistic, she is conniving, and she is evil. We’re all hoping that she gets the maximum sentence allowed for every single one of her charges."
