HOUSTON (TCN) -- A 22-year-old woman will spend more than two decades in prison for her role in the 2018 shooting death of a classmate who reportedly faked being a gang member.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office announced that a jury convicted Keona Mouton on Tuesday, Aug. 6, of the murder of 18-year-old Delindsey Mack. She subsequently received a sentence of 23 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, on Nov. 13, 2018, a then-16-year-old Mouton, "lured Mack to an after-school meeting" at Lamar High School, where two other men fatally shot the victim.
One of the shooters, Kendrick Johnson, was a gang member linked to at least six other slayings, and he was sentenced in 2021 to life in prison in connection with Mack’s death. The second shooter has not yet been identified or arrested.
Prosecutors said Johnson was the "main sniper" for a local gang and even "staked out the funerals of rivals that he had killed to look for more targets."
Another man, Dave’on Thomas, reportedly acted as the getaway driver and received his sentence last year of 50 years in prison.
According to the district attorney’s office, Mack, who was allegedly interested in dating Mouton, sustained seven gunshot wounds in the ambush.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing gang war. Social media posts reportedly described Mack as a gang member, but prosecutors said he was "known to be an outstanding football player." He had recently transferred from Yates High School to get away from gang violence.
KHOU-TV reports that Mack’s father said his son faked being a gang member on social media out of fear, and the victim’s "alternate persona" made him a target.
Macks father reportedly commented, "It’s sad that someone can create a persona on social media that makes someone hate them that bad."
In a statement, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said, "This was not just an ambush, but an execution that was planned and carried out by several people, and we want to hold all of them responsible to get justice for the victim and his family."
