TINLEY PARK, Ill. (TCN) -- A father will spend over five decades in prison for beating his teenage daughter to death following an argument about her attending her high school prom.
WFLD-TV reports a judge sentenced to Mohammed Almaru to 55 years behind bars for the first-degree murder of his 17-year-old daughter, Mia Maro.
On May 1, 2022, Tinley Park Police responded to a call about a death investigation at a home on West 167th Street. When officers arrived, they found Maro deceased in the lower level of the home and Almaru with self-inflicted wounds to the throat and wrist. Police said Almaru took pills, so he was transported to a local hospital and stabilized.
According to WFLD, Maro and Almaru got into a fight because Almaru said she could go to prom but then changed his mind because he "did not trust her." Not long before she was killed, Maro reportedly texted a family member saying she thought her father might "beat" or even "kill" her.
Court documents cited by WGN-TV say Maro was beaten severely on her head, which caused brain hemorrhages and her brain to make contact with her skull. She also reportedly sustained injuries and bruises to other parts of her body. Police reportedly found a metal pole and a mallet, both of which had Maro’s blood on it.
On the day Almaru killed his daughter, he reportedly texted one of his sons, saying, "I lost my mind, went out of control and beat her," adding, "I f--ked up."
