Canadian man obsessed with woman allegedly flew to Calif., posed as delivery driver, and stabbed her

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (TCN) -- Authorities recently arrested two Canadian suspects in an alleged plot to kill a woman one of them met through a video game.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, on the night of Nov. 25, deputies responded to multiple reports of a stabbing on Bollenbacher Drive in Salinas. Authorities found three people, including one of the suspects, who had all sustained injuries consistent with a stabbing, and they were transported to a local hospital with minor to critical injuries. The three individuals will likely survive.
Sheriff’s office detectives determined 25-year-old Devin Vandorhoef met a woman through a gaming platform, and he "developed a year’s-long obsession with the victim." Vanderohoef allegedly traveled from Canada to California with 25-year-old Darius Whyte, where Vandorhoef allegedly posed as a delivery driver and knocked on the woman’s door while holding a package.
Authorities allege the female victim’s boyfriend opened the door. Vandorhoef allegedly "forced his way in and began stabbing the boyfriend with a knife resulting in multiple critical injuries." The female victim reportedly retrieved a sharp metal object to defend her boyfriend, and she was strangled and stabbed during a struggle with Vandorhoef. Vandorhoef reportedly sustained numerous severe stab wounds during the incident.
According to the sheriff’s office, the package Vandorhoef was holding contained handcuffs, duct tape, and knives, but investigators say it "is unknown how these items were intended on being used."
Officials reportedly spoke with Whyte near the scene, and he said he had "no knowledge of what happened." However, upon further investigation, deputies determined Whyte acted as an accomplice, and he was aware of Vandorhoef’s intentions. Whyte was arrested on Nov. 26 while he was sitting on a plane preparing to return to Canada.
Vandorhoef remains held in the Monterey County Jail on over $4.1 million bail, while Whyte’s bail was set at $1 million. They each face charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit attempted murder. Vandorhoef also faces charges of mayhem, stalking, and burglary.
