FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (TCN) -- A 21-year-old man was convicted of assaulting an elderly man inside a YMCA locker room, requiring the victim to be hospitalized.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office announced April 28 that a jury found Malik Smith guilty of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Smith is set to be sentenced on May 20.
According to an initial news release from the prosecutor's office, on the morning of March 1, 2024, Smith and the victim "exchanged words" inside the YMCA locker room. Smith then reportedly slammed the victim's head against a counter. Prosecutors said a witness intervened, pulling Smith away from the victim.
Smith fled the YMCA, but law enforcement later located him and took him into custody. The victim was hospitalized for critical injuries.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald called it a "vicious, senseless attack," adding, "The victim was left unconscious and bleeding, and he had to be hospitalized after this assault."
