CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. (TCN) -- A 19-year-old man was arrested after his newborn son was hospitalized and died from a brain injury last week.
On April 20, Gladstone Police Department officers responded to Randall Children's Hospital for a possible child abuse investigation and learned from medical staff that the 6-week-old victim, Paxton Shuler, had been admitted on April 16 with a "life-threatening brain injury."
The Clackamas County District Attorney's Office said Shuler died April 23. Shuler reportedly sustained blunt force trauma or "extreme pressure" to the head, which caused a lack of oxygen to flow to his brain. Skutley is being charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault.
The little boy was reportedly in the care of his father, Maliki Skutley, that day while his mother went to work. Skutley, his girlfriend, and their child reportedly lived at the Budget Inn in Gladstone.
He's being held at the Clackamas County Jail without bail. Court records show his trial is scheduled to begin June 11.
