Divorce attorney indicted in alleged plot to kidnap and fatally stab nurse

CLEVELAND (TCN) -- A jury recently indicted a 51-year-old divorce attorney in connection with the death of a nurse over a decade ago.

According to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, on March 24, 2013, Aliza Sherman went to meet with her divorce attorney, Gregory Moore. She was stabbed multiple times while waiting outside the office building and called police. A passerby reportedly found her on the sidewalk and also called law enforcement. Sherman was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Per the indictment, investigators believe Moore allegedly plotted to kidnap Sherman to obstruct a judge from conducting the trial in the divorce case of Sanford Sherman and Aliza Sherman during the week of March 25, 2013.

At approximately 5:14 p.m., while waiting outside, Sherman reportedly texted Moore, "Will u be here soon? Kind of cold." Investigators allege that either Moore or an unknown co-conspirator then went up to Sherman, circled behind her, chased her, and then stabbed her over 10 times.

According to the indictment, Moore reportedly continued to text Sherman after the stabbing "for the purpose of creating false evidence that Moore was unaware of Sherman’s assault." At around 7:30 p.m., he reportedly went inside his office building from the dock entrance, which was in an area where law enforcement couldn’t see him as they investigated the crime scene.

According to the indictment, investigators were also looking into Moore’s cellphone usage in 2012 in reference to bomb threats that were called at courthouses on Jan. 18, 2012, May 30, 2012, and July 10, 2012. Moore was allegedly scheduled to be in trial on those dates. Investigators said the threats "were part of a pattern of behavior Moore exhibited to delay court appearances he was scheduled to attend."

After learning about the investigation into the bomb threats, Moore allegedly obtained a new cellphone on his law office’s business account and was given control of a mobile hot spot that was also on the business account. Investigators allege Moore’s ability to change devices on the law firm’s account "facilitated Moore’s ability to perform the overt acts in furtherance of the kidnapping of Aliza Sherman in a manner calculated to avoid detection by law enforcement."

On May 2, a jury indicted Moore on charges of aggravated murder, conspiracy, murder, and kidnapping, and U.S. Marshals arrested him in Texas. He remains held in the Williamson County Jail in Texas as a fugitive from justice. Moore will be arraigned at a later date.

According to WOIO-TV, Sherman worked as a fertility nurse and earned her nursing degree from Cleveland State University. She reportedly had four children.
