ATLANTA (TCN) -- A 17-year-old student with special needs was hospitalized after allegedly being assaulted with scissors by a classmate on Dec. 12.
His alleged attacker was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, WXIA reports. According to a statement from Atlanta Public Schools on Dec. 15, the suspect is in jail without bond. He is also facing disciplinary charges under the school district’s code of conduct.
Authorities have not named the victim or the suspect.
Video evidence obtained by WXIA allegedly shows a student on his back in the hallway, trying to fend off an attacker, and being struck at least three times. Another video allegedly shows an attacker pulling scissors from his backpack and striking the victim, who is then shown to be bleeding around the eye. The incident forced the school to go into lockdown.
According to the victim’s attorney, Musa Ghanayem, he suffered permanent damage to his thyroid, an eye injury, and other medical issues that doctors are still evaluating, WSB-TV reports.
Witnesses who spoke with WSB-TV claim the altercation began when the victim called the attacker a racial slur, which Ghanayem denies. According to Ghanayem, the victim is often bullied and will do what other students tell him to because he wants to make friends.
This was not the first incident of its kind at the school. A parent told WXIA that her son was attacked by someone with a pair of scissors last year.
