GALVESTON, Texas (TCN) -- A teen accused of killing her grandmother with her boyfriend’s help pleaded guilty to capital murder right before her trial was set to begin.
Tara King, 17, was sentenced to life in prison Jan. 5, the date jury selection was supposed to start, KTRK reports.
On Feb. 6, 2025, a neighbor called police to request a welfare check on her neighbor, Tammy King, 61, whom she had not spoken to in several days. When police arrived at her home, they found her shot to death inside, according to KTRK. Click2Houston reports authorities believe she might have been dead for several days.
The home had been ransacked and several guns were missing, the outlet said.
KRIV reports the killing took place after Tara King argued with her grandmother over not wanting to go to school.
Tara King and her boyfriend, 18-year-old Uriah Urick, were then reported missing, according to KTRK. They were found in Laredo, Texas, several days later after changing the appearance of their hair and offering people money to drive them across state lines.
Both were arrested on Feb. 9, 2025, and charged with capital murder. Click2Houston reports authorities believe money was stolen from inside the home, which escalates the charge to capital murder. This carries an automatic sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
Urick was sentenced to life in prison on Nov. 7, 2025, KRIV reports.
